Since Ontario Shores introduced #MindVine back in January, 2014 we have had an inspiring space to share a variety of stories related to mental health.
Among our contributors are psychiatrists, nurses, researchers, patients and family members.
Personally, it has been incredibly rewarding to see this space used to share information and ignite conversations. Three years after its launch we have a diverse collection of stories from far ranging perspectives impacted by mental health and mental illness.
On the eve of National Mental Health Week (May 1-7) I’m proud to introduce you to someone who brings another unique perspective to #MindVine.
Katie Enright has been a mental health nurse at Ontario Shores for more than 10 years. Along with a firm understanding of mental health care from a provider perspective, Katie knows first-hand what it is like to live with mental illness.
Mental illness first entered her life as an adolescent and over the years she has struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and panic disorders. She is also diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder.
Like so many others, Katie’s recovery journey has had its share of ups and downs. However, she learned to manage her illness while balancing a career and life as a mother of two. Her story and courage to come forward and share her story is remarkable.
Again this year #MindVine is hosting its #5in5 series. However, instead of five different patient and family recovery stories in five days, Katie will be posting a blog each day during National Mental Health Week that speaks to her own lived experience with mental illness as a wife, mother and mental health nurse working in a specialty mental health hospital.
Katie’s motivation for participating in the #5in5 series is simple. She wants to eliminate stigma and help others who are suffering silence.
All of us at Ontario Shores are proud of Katie for having the courage to open up. Her experiences are sure to inspire others who may have taken a similar path in their lives and will provide hope to people who may be struggling and require support.
